Morrissey’s earliest solo concert performance finally surfaced over the internet a few weeks ago. The concert was documented in the video collection “Hulmerist”.
Two years after what would be The Smiths final concert performance, Morrissey felt it only right to give the fans a proper ‘farewell’ gig. The farewell reunion was never to be because of Johnny Marr’s “no thank you”, so the remaining members including touring guitarist Craig Gannon played what eventually became Morrissey’s first gig as a solo artist. Fans were packed into the Wolverhampton auditorium with the admission price of wearing a Smiths or Morrissey t-shirt. With the venue obviously filled to capacity, some resourceful fans took to climbing in through the windows.
Audio and video has made its way to the web, and I’ve seen a vinyl pressing of the concert at Amoeba Records in Hollywood.
