While back-announcing some songs this week, it occurred how many of these song titles would make great tombstone messages. How about we start a trending topic and see how many we can get on board. Use the hashtag #MozEpitaphs
Some examples of ones that are on-the-nose: You Know I Couldn’t Last, One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell, I Know it’s Over, There is a Light That Never Goes Out
Some of them specific to the individual: Death of a Disco Dancer, Never Had No One Ever, The Queen is Dead, The Last of the Famous International Playboys, First of the Gang to Die,
I’m sure this isn’t the first time someone has thought of this but, hey, let’s have some fun with it.
Just took a look at Alain Whyte’s guitar that he posted for sale on eBay and it looks like there are at least 18 bids so far bringing it up to almost $1000. It’s a pretty nice looking vintage Silvertone with a handsome case. It even comes with a picture of Morrissey holding it. (Capo on the 6th fret, I think?) With the price it’s fetching so far, it looks like it’ll go to a good home.
Also, this week, another installment from Breakfast Champion Julie Hamill of London (@MarriedToTheMoz on Twitter) on her blog page. This time it’s fifteen minutes with Jonny Bridgwood bass player for Morrissey during the Vauxhall and I through Southpaw era. A great interview and quite possibly her best “Fifteen Minutes with….” yet. Follow her or my twitter feed for the link
It looks like you guys are doing a pretty good job about logging on to here whenever you tune in to Indie 1031. That’s EXCELLENT, by the way. Anytime and EVERY time you log on to hear our great programming make sure you stop by THIS PAGE. And just to see who’s paying attention….. Why don’t I give away a couple passes to my DJ set at the Echo Sunday September 2nd Morrissey/The Smiths night to the first person who posts a reply here with the name of the song I play on today’s show AFTER “Hand in Glove”. Make sure to include an email address where I can get a hold of you. Post the name of the song that I play AFTER “Hand in Glove” for the passes to the Echo on Sunday Sep. 2nd. Good luck.
Great news, Breakfast Champions. Immediately following the Wednesday broadcast of Breakfast With The Smiths: The World of Morrissey we will be followed by Indie Retrograde hosted by Dredd Scott. The show features Legends of Indie Rock including XTC, Blondie, DEVO, The B-52’s, Echo and the Bunnymen, Elvis Costello and The Ramones to name a few. So make sure to keep it on Indie 1031 immediately following our show on Wednesdays.
I have a couple of gigs I wanna tell you about coming up in September that I hope you’ll make it out to.
Sunday September 2nd, I’ll be back at The Echo in Echo Park doing my DJ set for Morrissey/The Smiths night. That’s the Sunday before Labor Day and that means no school, no work the next day for most of us. It’s always a great night when we do Morrissey/The Smiths, so I hope to see you there. Come on up and say hello.
Friday September 21st and Saturday September 22nd, my Morrissey/The Smiths tribute band Sweet and Tender Hooligans will be performing a different set each night at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach. Friday’s set will include only songs from the Smiths catalog and Saturday will feature only songs from Morrissey’s solo catalog. A limited amount of discount tickets are available when you purchase for BOTH NIGHTS. So, let’s see how many of you can make it out.
Thanks again for tuning in, friends. Drop me a line on Twitter anytime @JoseMaldonado or just post a message here.
According to Morrissey’s official website, the permanent replacement for outgoing drummer Matt Walker is Anthony Burulcich of The Bravery. Burulcich replaces interim drummer Eric Louis Gardner beginning this fall for Morrissey’s upcoming US tour beginning in Boston.
I’m sensing a trend in recent years that Morrissey has slowly replaced all but Boz Boorer with American musicians. USA! USA! USA! (Sorry, I had to).
I’m pleased to welcome the return of April Richardson on this week’s broadcast. April’s schedule with E! ‘s Chelsea Lately show has kept her from being a more frequent guest on Breakfast with The Smiths, but she is always a delight to have on the show whenever I can. Check your local listings for Chelsea Lately to watch April crack wise and profess her love for Dr. Pepper and Taco Bell.
An early heads-up for you all to join me Sunday September 2nd at the Echo for my DJ set Morrissey/The Smiths night. This will be the night before Labor Day so that means no work, no school the next day for most of you. Mark your calendar.
Keep those requests coming, Breakfast Champions.
